Apple appears set to unleash the mobile device markets latest moving target with a planned iPhone event next week. While exact details of the event are of course top secret (unless you hang out in local bars), it matters little to most consumers as the words “new” and “iPhone” automatically results in people digging out their camping equipment and setting up shop in front of their local Apple retailer.

Despite how it may appear, I do try to avoid bringing Apple into every one of my WOTW columns, though by doing so I make this job harder than it needs to be. I mean the company is such an integral part of the decisions that many in this industry make that to not include them is really a job itself. Plus, with names like “iPad” it seems Apple products and decisions are ripe for some ribbing.

BlackBerry may be down and out, but it still has clout, or Klout, rather, with the phone’s aficionados scoring higher than either Android or iPhone users on average.

AT&T Mobility rattled some cages late last week when it announced it would begin reducing data speeds for some customers currently on unlimited data plans. The threshold before getting “reduced” is when data usage puts a consumer among the top 5% of data users. However there is some vaguery (it’s a word now) as to where the threshold is for being in that elite 5%, with AT&T Mobility only noting that “you have to use an extraordinary of data in a single billing period.”
