Google Inc.’s announcement this morning that it planned to acquire Motorola Mobility Holding Inc. for $12.5 billion is expected to have a significant impact on the mobile device space for no other reason than it will give Google a more direct channel for its blossoming Android ecosystem.

The Baltimore test pitted Verizon Wireless’ LTE network against Sprint Nextel Corp.’s WiMAX network and was conducted in the shadows of Baltimore’s historic Camden Yards baseball park. The tests were run over similar smartphones running Google’s Inc.’s Android OS and using the Ookla Speedtest.net application.

According to a study by ABI Research published today Android tablets have already dented the iPad’s market share to the tune of 20% over the last twelve months.

We haven’t heard much from Twitter recently. Facebook has been in the limelight for reasons both good and bad, and Google+ burst onto the scene to an overwhelmingly positive reception, but Twitter have been fairly quiet since announcing their photo-hosting service a few months ago.

For a little over a year Microsoft has been extracting license fees from HTC for their use of Google’s Android operating system, on the basis that Android infringes several of Microsoft’s patents. While their claims have yet to be tested in court, Microsoft has been dangling the threat of lawsuits in front of other Android manufacturers, including Motorola and Barnes & Noble.

Google’s latest attempt stab at a social network, Google+, has proved to be quite the hit amongst the tech elite and casual users alike – so much so that Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has joined to check out the competition, and is currently the most-followed user.
