So, AT&T Mobility is finally set to commercially launch LTE services across five markets this weekend, throwing its hat into the oncoming LTE battle that is currently dominated domestically Verizon Wireless. (Sorry MetroPCS.)
(I only half kid with the use of the term “finally” as I still vividly remember AT&T executive Kris Rinne speaking at a 4G World event a couple of years ago basically saying the carrier was in no hurry to roll out LTE services as its plans for HSPA+ would take care of its mobile broadband needs. This plan was quickly pushed aside following Verizon Wireless’ rapid LTE rollout plans and AT&T Mobility has managed to throw up a LTE network in a relatively short period of time.)

The collective wisdom of Twitter is often called upon to provide answers. Where should I visit when I go on holiday to such and such a place? Can anyone recommend a good…? Which product should I buy? Recently, I’ve noticed a trend in such questions. Many people are coming to the end of a contract [...]

Despite how it may appear, I do try to avoid bringing Apple into every one of my WOTW columns, though by doing so I make this job harder than it needs to be. I mean the company is such an integral part of the decisions that many in this industry make that to not include them is really a job itself. Plus, with names like “iPad” it seems Apple products and decisions are ripe for some ribbing.

A little while ago Google announced they had purchased the g.co domain name, and were planning to use it exclusively for linking to Google-owned sites. Their existing URL shortening service, goo.gl, was to remain for user-generated links to any URL they pleased.

Hewlett-Packard Co.’s (HPQ) decision to stop making hardware for its webOS platform on the heels of Google Inc.’s (GOOG) proposed acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI) gives Google yet another advantage in the operating system wars. While HTC Corp. (HTCXF) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SSNLF) might have wanted to adopt another OS to [...]

Wow! Now that was a crazy week for the mobile device market. First Google went all crazy in announcing plans to acquire Motorola Mobility to the chagrin of it seems just about everyone; and just yesterday Hewlett-Packard went even crazier announcing it was basically shuttering its mobile operations including the WebOS business it acquired along with Palm last year for more than $1 billion.
