Apple appears set to unleash the mobile device markets latest moving target with a planned iPhone event next week. While exact details of the event are of course top secret (unless you hang out in local bars), it matters little to most consumers as the words “new” and “iPhone” automatically results in people digging out their camping equipment and setting up shop in front of their local Apple retailer.

Despite how it may appear, I do try to avoid bringing Apple into every one of my WOTW columns, though by doing so I make this job harder than it needs to be. I mean the company is such an integral part of the decisions that many in this industry make that to not include them is really a job itself. Plus, with names like “iPad” it seems Apple products and decisions are ripe for some ribbing.

There was a victory for music owners and operators of so-called “music locker” services today as a judge in New York ruled such services do not infringe copyright, as claimed by a conglomerate of record labels in a case against website MP3tunes.com.

VoIP firm Skype has reportedly paid $85 million for smartphone group text messaging service GroupMe, to put itself on competitive footing with rival messaging services from RIM, Apple and others.

There was another twist in the iPad vs Android punch and counter-punch today as a consumer survey indicated that 94.5% of respondents were interested in purchasing Apple’s ubiquitous iPad over an alternate tablet device.

Google Inc.’s announcement this morning that it planned to acquire Motorola Mobility Holding Inc. for $12.5 billion is expected to have a significant impact on the mobile device space for no other reason than it will give Google a more direct channel for its blossoming Android ecosystem.

A lot of noise was made last week about Nintendo getting pressured by investors to bring its games to the iOS platform. It’s pretty clear that the market for stand-alone portable gaming devices is toast, and Nintendo needs to make some tough (ego-shattering) choices.
