A lot of noise was made last week about Nintendo getting pressured by investors to bring its games to the iOS platform. It’s pretty clear that the market for stand-alone portable gaming devices is toast, and Nintendo needs to make some tough (ego-shattering) choices.

A large-scale investigation into the demand for mobile developers has revealed that Google’s Android operating system is seeing greater demand than ever before, and is on track to overtake demand for iPhone developers in 2012.

A few months ago Amazon surprised the world by launching its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player, a music locker service that allowed users to upload and store their entire music collection (well, up to 5GB of it) to stream and download as they wished.

If you’ll recall, a few months ago Microsoft filed a protest against Apple’s ownership of the “App Store” trademark, on the grounds that the term is too generic and cannot belong to any one company. Many other companies seemingly agreed with Ballmer and Co., and the trademark was also challenges in Europe by Nokia, HTC and Sony Ericsson.

Although many heralded the arrival of Amazon.com Inc.’s Android Appstore as a boost to the Android ecosystem, and a victory for consumer choice, Apple Inc. congratulated Amazon.com in a rather different way – they sued them.

We get it – application stores are cool. With the two biggest games in town, Apple Inc.’s App Store and Google Inc.’s Android’s Market both running in to several hundred thousand apps and making developers millions of dollars, it only seems natural that others would want to irk the successful formula.

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Hot on the heels of the launch of fellow bookseller Amazon’s own Android Appstore, Barnes & Noble has today gone official with what has been rumoured for some time – an App Store for their tablet / eBook reader, the Nook Color.

In what many would see as a fairly bizarre move, Apple Inc. yesterday released a new app on the iOS App Store called iAd Gallery, the sole purpose of which is – you guessed it – to be a gallery for iAds. What purpose this app serves is completely unknown.
