Facebook VoIP being rolled out?

A curious and mystery shrouded “Call” button has surfaced on Facebook today, only to be removed almost as quickly as it appeared.

A source close to AroundThe.Net sent a screenshot to the website earlier this morning showing a “Call” icon next to the “Chat,” “Send Message” and “Poke” buttons.

Apparently, when the Israeli source clicked on the icon, a Facebook box opened with the word “calling” next to an icon of his friend. The call, however, failed to connect and it’s unclear whether the person on the other end of the “line” even knew they were getting a VoIP call.

ATN says it has also heard reports of other Israelis spotting the mysterious feature before it was abruptly pulled down, prompting speculation that Facebook may have dumped Skype Ltd. implementation for an Israeli VoIP partner like Fring, or even U.S. firm Vonage whose research and development team are based in Israel.

You can see a larger version of the screenshot here.
