While the Samsung Galaxy Tab has only just been unveiled at the IFA conference in Berlin last week, we’re already hearing news concerning the tablet’s successor.
A highly reliable source in Seoul has told Unplugged the second version of Samsung’s tablet will likely run on NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chip, although negotiations are still in the final stages and are not yet set in stone. The first version of the Samsung Tab, set to officially launch Monday night, runs on Samsung’s own Hummingbird processor, but it seems Samsung wants to up the graphics ante for the next version, possibly to turn it more into a gaming tablet.
The Samsung Tab 2 will also run Google’s Android Honeycomb, the version coming after the much awaited Gingerbread.
Speaking of Gingerbread, however, our Korean source who has seen the operating system in action says it is rather disappointingly “more of a Froyo upgrade for smartphones,” and not really tablet orientated. Honeycomb, however, is a different matter.
The time-frame for the Samsung Tab 2 is apparently set for Q2 of 2011, which fits in with the rough expected release date for Honeycomb.
Neither NVIDIA or Samsung would comment on the accuracy of the rumors.
