Android passes 100,000 apps and billionth download

.

Google’s Android army continues to march onwards unabated, passing the 100,000 app mark this week according to data from AndroidLib.

The leap from 50,000 to 100,000 apps available for download on the Android Marketplace took just three months, an astonishingly short period of time.

Another incredible factoid from AndroLib is that over one billion Android applications have thus far been downloaded by Fandroids, with no sign of the numbers leveling off any time soon.

According to the stats, over 14,000 applications became available in June, and at the half way point in July, over 10,000 new apps have already cropped up.

Recently, at MobileBeat 2010, Admob Team Manager Brendon Kraham announced that statistics collected by Google’s Admob ad network predicted that Android users would surpass iPhone users by the end of 2010, although data usage and number of apps on the iPhone remains higher.

Admob’s stats are not particularly suprising considering the sheer amount of devices (around 50) on offer with Google’s popular OS, from every US carrier, whereas Apple’s iPhone is still restricted to AT&T.

Of course, while it looks highly likely that Android is set to overtake Apple very soon indeed, we’d advise speculators to place bets with caution. After all, if the rumors are correct and Verizon gets its hands on the iPhone within the next few months, we could be faced with a very different picture.

First sentence – “unabaited” isn’t a word. The correct form is “unabated” meaning without end.

This is good news for everyone – developers, manufacturers, google, carriers, etc. Thankfully, I saw noi comparison to the iPhone, which I’m tired of seeing.

Good point Christopher, and thanks! Will amend that now!
